The Installation Process
You've done your research carefully, called potential suppliers, asked the essential questions, and made a decision. Now you plan to take a long weekend and have the phone elves magically put your new system in place, while you traverse the back nine at your favorite golf course. Not a wise idea.
According to Telcom Library, Inc., 83% of all phone system problems are related to the quality of initial installation. Your presence is required for all installations.
You may be called upon to make decisions about:
INSIDE WIRING RESPONSIBILITIES AND WIRING CAPACITY: Find out where your landlord's responsibilities end and yours begin for the telephone wiring within your building and offices. To allow for effortless growth and reduce wiring charges in the future, have cable run to all anticipated telephone locations during the initial installation.
EQUIPMENT ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Place your equipment in the same working conditions you enjoy. Don't put it in unventilated coat closets, for example, or allocate inadequate space. Make sure your central telephone equipment and main cabling junction box are situated away from sprinklers, pipes, cleaning materials and other environmental hazards.
Get proper documentation about the installation, such as labeling cable and jacks, which lines appear on what phones, and how the phones are programmed. Allow sufficient time for system installation, and stay on the premises for the duration.
You need to answer questions such as:
Which wall do you want to drill through?
Who wants a second jack for a modem?
Were would you like the fax machine?
Are you sure you want this equipment here?
Finally, protect your investment by encouraging all employees in your company to attend the training session your supplier should schedule.
With a little foresight and planning you can fully reap the benefits of experiencing a quality installation while avoiding future problems.
